We take boulder very seriously, and we have a zero tolerance policy for any inappropriate behavior. Everyone is encouraged to participate at their own comfort level, and our facilitators go over what that looks like at each stuff, so everyone is clear before we begin. What makes this a “date” is that you get to choose who you enjoyed interacting with, and we’ll put you in touch after the speed. We like to let the women choose. Men will be instructed on how to be grounded and open-fun so they can be felt. We find when we trust the wisdom of the feminine somehow it all works out. You’ll want to look good but also comfortable. Though we’ve had some folks show up after work near suits and they’ve managed okay you want to be able to move comfortably during the more movement-based stations. Don’t worry about shoes, we’ll take those off before we start.

Teaching research methodology to our new PhD fellows is my favourite class. Doing so in small groups, as is often the case in our PhD programmes and professional training, allows me to engage in creative and innovative educational formats. Every time I teach, I try a new set-up or tweak things a little. But of course, some formats have proven their value over time, so they become permanent fixtures every year.
In an interactive classroom setting, we invite our PhDs to pitch their research idea to a few staff members in minute 1-on-1 meetings. For staff members, the game is different. They have no choice — they simply talk to whomever sits opposite of them — but students can form strategies to ensure they meet their ideal set of professors. Experience tells us that both staff and students enjoy the exercise. For the students, the short meetings offer quick feedback at an early stage of their PhD, in a friendly constructive way.
They are explicitly introduced to the research fields of the institute.

This campaign is a much needed effort by SGIM to increase medical student and resident interest in careers in General Internal Medicine while encouraging faculty to flaunt their pride in this important career choice. Fourteen GIM faulty gathered alongside students and residents to share their insights into why GIM was the right choice for their diverse career paths. Students rotated through tables in 8-minute intervals to get a taste of all of the opportunities that await after training in GIM.
Conversation abounded about the variety of opportunities and paths in GIM and each time “switch” was called, learners were reluctantly pulled away to start yet another in-depth conversation. At the end of the night, learners were given a chance to reconnect with faculty they met while rotating while also making connections to open up future mentorship and advising relationships.

Weinberg and Moussawi collaborated with the other faculty members teaching the capstone Information Systems project course to explore how students could give and receive higher quality peer feedback on team presentations. They compared two different presentation approaches. Next, teams changed pairings, and the process repeated.
Students completed brief surveys after each project-sharing session, and a sampling of sessions was observed by a trained researcher. According to the surveys, students reported giving and receiving more helpful feedback during the speed dating sessions compared to sessions with serial, class-wide presentations. Students also reported being significantly more engaged during the speed dating sessions.
Classroom observations corroborated student perceptions, documenting a greater percentage of students participating actively during the speed-dating sessions compared to the traditional approach. Given these positive results, Weinberg, Moussawi, and colleagues are using speed dating for team presentations and feedback sessions more frequently in this Information Systems course.
Students reported giving and receiving more feedback, as well as being more engaged, during the speed dating events compared to the traditional presentations. A trained researcher observed more active participation during the speed dating compared to the traditional presentations. The distribution of observed engagement activity for speed dating and traditional presentation sessions can be seen in figure 2.

Developing meaningful community-based participatory relationships between researchers and the community can be challenging. The overall success of a community-based participatory relationship should be predicated on commitment and respect from empowered stakeholders. Prior to developing the technique discussed in this article, we hypothesized that the process of fostering relationships between researchers and the community was much like a social relationship: It has to develop organically and cannot be forced.
To address this challenge, we developed a community-based participatory research-speed dating technique to foster relationships based on common interests, which we call CBPR-SD. As part of a federally funded community-based research project, the speed dating technique was implemented for 10 researchers and 11 community leaders with a goal of developing scholarly collaborative groups who will submit applications for community-based research grants.
Our preliminary findings suggest that CBPR-SD is a successful tool for promoting productive scholarly relationships between researchers and community leaders.
